Acupuncture: The marathoners best friend

man running on mountain path

Chicago Marathon Runners have been using Chicago Loop Acupuncture every year to prevent and recover from injuries. Acupuncture is used to prevent injuries by stimulating blood flow directly to the muscle tissues. This allows for more nutrient uptake making the muscles and tendons more flexible and thereby stronger. With the heavy hitting pavement under the feet for 26.2 miles, the body will need this extra support to prepare for the big day. Your acupuncturist will approach your body from a preventive perspective, looking for possible weaknesses already inherent from the marathon training, correct them and advise on future training.

As we encourage and support acupuncture for marathon training we also support the use of acupuncture post marathon. Using acupuncture after a lifetime achievement such as a marathon will help move the body out of the shock zone to homeostasis much quicker. Acupuncture is naturally adaptogenic, meaning it helps the body better handle stressors by communicating with the nervous system. The body’s reserves of energy are depleted very rapidly during a marathon, all bodily systems take a heavy hit. The most common complaints of our marathoners include muscle pain, breathing difficulties, trouble sleeping, restless leg syndrome and weakened immune system. It can take a total of four weeks and sometimes even more to fully recover from a marathon.

Acupuncture and other bodywork modalities help your body recover quicker and more optimally. Immediately increasing the blood flow and energy to the organs, it sets the stage for faster healing and repair.
